He, who wants to get a dog for training, should look somewhere else.
The Anatolian Dog is a sheepdog intended for guarding flocks against big predators. Through natural development he grew independent consideration and conduct. He decides quickly, he needn´t wait for what the master orders him to do, he knows himself. However, it doesn´t mean that he doesn´t obey.
He is very teachable and perceptive; it is not necessary to treat him harshly, otherwise he would become distrustful. The necessity to accept his master unconditionally as a head of the pack is connected with his independency and robustness. The head is always the one. He must be taught obedience since the puppyhood. He manages regular training very well, however you mustn´t try to drill him. Training must be a game for him, constant repeating soon wearies him. Several times and enough. As soon as he stops enoying the training, he will stop paying attention or will carry out your orders with boredom and distaste; you won´t bribe him even with a goody. If you are lack of experience, let somebody advise you. We intentionally underwent the basic training in the cynological club. We started from the age of five months. It´s not because we had been afraid and had not managed to make them obey. At home at the age of two months we managed the commands like “sit”, “stay”, “come” etc. We also have quite a lot of experience but they are big and strong dogs and it is necessary to socialize them from an early age. And when 60 kg pulls you on the leash, you can feel it. We have two dogs and we dare say that when we go for a walk with our dogs, we can hold both leashes in one hand without any effort; they walk solidly side-by-side beside the left leg.
His natural watchfulness and guarding instinct leads to the remarkable activity, particularly at night. He doesn´t recognize the boarders of his garden, he likes wandering and considers as his own all the area which is within his sight. He loves and needs long daily walks, otherwise he is bored. Since he has great eyesight, he can see a hare as quickly as you and you can be sure that he won´t think long whether to run after it if “force major” doesn´t stop him. When our one-year-old puppies decided to go for a walk on their own, during one week they literally “unstitched” a hole in the new wire netting. The first was tearing, the other was watching. Briefly speaking, it is always better to prevent such escapes. Thorough fencing, obedience and leash with you are obvious matter of fact.
